We probably won't hear from Sean for a few days, but at least we have
this from the mission office….Sean is in the Rockaway Beach area, so has been evacuated according to this email.
Hi Parents, Bishops, and Stake Presidents,
President Calderwood and the mission office staff want to
assure you that your missionary is safe.
We just wanted to let you know of our preparations for
Hurricane Sandy. We have evacuated all of the missionaries in low-lying
coastal areas, areas such as Bensonhurst, part of Dyker Heights, Coney Island,
Rockaway Beach, and South Shore. They are expecting up to 10 foot swells
coming off the ocean which may cause flooding plus beach erosion. We are
also expecting high gusts and sustained winds. We think the major problem
inland will be with loss of electricity. The
missionaries have been advised to get a case of water and peanut butter
and jam, plus snacks and fruit that does not need
refrigeration. We have moved all the Sister Missionaries into
the Mission Home with President and Sister Calderwood. (Poor
President Calderwood—27 sister missionaries, two daughters and a wife, all
wanting to get in the bathroom and do their hair.) Please don’t
worry. Your missionaries are safe and we think all will be well.
All of our love,
Sister Shepherd
Missionary Secretary
New York New York South Mission
