Dear Familia,
So with Dad's question about the safe, I had heard that
story, but I heard that it was in Broad Channel, not Staten Island, but I could
be wrong there. [We saw in the news that missionaries
in Sean's area found an old safe while cleaning out a basement, which the owner
told them to throw away. When the
missionaries got it open, it contained over $25,000 in bills -- the latest of
which were dated in the early 1960s. The
owner wanted to give it to the missionaries but the missionaries insisted on
the owner keeping it to help with his clean up expenses]. But no I
haven't had that kind of luck. I have managed to score some N64 games and
controllers that I will probably be sending home sometime though. Kind of like
$25,000, right?
Anyway so this week has been kind of the beginning of
transitioning back to regular work. Most of the week was still service but Thursday
and Friday we started a bit of actual proselyting. It is interesting going
back. This week is when we are scheduled to go back to full proselyting except
for Saturday, but we have a few service commitments already on Tuesday and
Wednesday so it will probably just be those nights. This week for service
we have spent a lot of time at a house on B 69th. We talked to the lady last
Sunday and the four of us in the pad have gone over there three days now, with
one more day this week. Interestingly this lady has a somewhat famous daughter.
She played the daughter in Law Abiding Citizen and has been in a few episodes
of The Goodwife. And like any good child star she also does music, which, as
far as pre-teen pop goes, wasn't too bad. So that's just the interesting tidbit
of the day.
This Saturday and Sunday we had the chance to hear from
Elder Halstrom from the Presidency of the Seventy. Saturday night we had a
mission conference that he came and spoke at. He and President Calderwood and
Elder Olsen (our area 70) all spoke to us mostly about transitioning back to
regular missionary work and about what we have learned from this experience. It
was interesting just reflecting on it all. Of course the general theme from it
was charity. Just seeing all the people in dire need and desperation and we
were the only people who could help them. I kind of just thought about how that
is like our position with Christ. We all have these muddy, moldy basements and
there is just way too much work to handle by ourselves, and then Christ is
there offering to come clean it all out for free, we just need to let him in.
Then yesterday he come to the Lynbrook District Conference
and spoke (and we were actually at church) so we got to listen to him
again. Most of his talk there was about making sure that we are always an
example to everyone around us. Especially when we are in those yellow vests,
everybody has their eyes on us, much more so than when we are in regular
proselyting clothes. President Calderwood also talked about that at the mission
conference. How Satan is not pleased with our efforts and right now he is doing
everything he can to get people to take a bad impression of us. Like yesterday
while we were working I went out to the car to grab a snack and while I was
eating I looked over at another group of our volunteers working a few houses
down from us and two of the young men there decided to take their shirts off to
work, just kind of messing around. It didn't seem like that big of a deal at
first but then I looked around and noticed at least three people from the
neighborhood just watching everything they were doing. So I had to go have a
little talk with them about that. It was interesting to see how fast that
concept came into play for us.
Alright to go on with the questions: The mission is done with service now except
for Saturday. We will probably keep going out once or twice a week for a while
though.
We got our transfer calls on Saturday night, we are all staying
together in Far Rockaway.
Well that's about it. Love you
all,
Elder Pearce
