Dear Familia,
This has been another pretty
uneventful week. English class hit 26 on Tuesday and on Thursday it dropped to
16 because it was raining (Hispanics don't do the rain). On Friday we had a
more interesting day. I took another trip out to the island with Elder Denton
to Freeport this time for a wedding. We were told it started at 7:30,
apparently it started at 8. But with Hispanics we got lucky when it started at
8:35. So we were there for about an hour and a half before anything started.
Then we had to leave right after they had the actual ceremony. At the same time
we were there, the branch had a talent show which I am wishing I would have
gone to now. I have seen the videos from other missionaries and it looked like
a lot of fun. I helped plan the skits that the missionaries did and they all
went really well. All those scout camp skits that no Hispanics or New Yorkers
have ever heard of (let alone Hispanic new yorkers).
On Saturday was our only real lesson
of the week. We knocked on a door looking for someone else but a guy answered a
let us in. He is mas o menos (more or less). We will see in the future how he turns out.
Sunday was kind of fun. Delilah wasn't at church again. Her older brother
Christian (who got baptized a few months ago) came and we talked to him for a
while after church. We need to have a talk with his family. Remember how I said
a while ago that their mother isn't very supportive. She got mad at Christian for going
to church because Sundays are days to spend time with your family and the
family was going to the beach. Oh New York.
Anyway, at about 5 we went over to
the Castillo's (a member family) just to meet with them. We were waiting for
this girl that was supposed to come over because she wants to meet with the
missionaries but after about 45 minutes waiting we just decided to share a
message with the family then get going. At about six we were talking with them
and the lesson was going really well (especially because Grandpa Castillo was
enjoying it, and he has never let the missionaries talk to him before), and a
baseball sized chunk of cement almost hits Elder Scoffield in the head. We had
heard a few bangs like cement hitting cement but we had just kind of ignored it
but after that we knew someone was trying to throw cement at us. We looked to see who it was just kind of
assuming it was some crazy kids, but no, it was some crazy like 40 or 50 year
olds. We called the cops because that was getting ridiculous and they had their
window broken by one like a month or two ago. So we were there for the rest of
the night waiting for the cops (the family doesn't speak english) who never showed
because it is NYPD. If someone isn't shot they won't come even though you just
walk down the street and you will see a group of them just sitting around doing
nothing all the time.
I think that's about it for this
week.
Love you guys,
Elder Pearce
